Mission:Statement

Everywhere I look, ’statement pieces’ are being touted as the new Spring trend and fabulous look-at-me pieces are finding their ways in retailers troves. But here is where I need to caution you.

Statement pieces are not a new trend — they are the items that create your personal style — they have a personal story that communicates either a memory or a special meaning for you. So if you purchase a ’statement necklace’ from a store like JCrew, how many other women are you sharing your statement with??

In our quest to develop our own personal style and show our individuality, accessories are typically the best way to do it. Think of Karl Lagerfield’s half gloves (he has over 300 pairs!) or Carrie Donovan’s glasses. Even our hairstyle can make a statement - think of Anna Wintour’s bob.

So, where do you develop and find your statement? Look for unique and interesting pieces that reflect your tastes and that has meaning. For example, I used wear a big, pear shaped ring on my right hand that I got for mother's day some years ag - it not only is eye-catching, it has sentimental value.

Have something made for you. Look for a jewelry designer that inspires you - that is not in every store — that is unique and special Try handbags or jewelry that are different, that show workmanship and tell a story of a favorite place (in my case, Seoul) you’ve traveled. Whatever the case, make your statement piece unique for you.

So, Dope Divas, what statement piece do you own that you wear?

MANic Monday: Walk it out

Fellas,
It's a little hard to do MANic Mondays because while I know what I like men to look like, I have no clue where you men go to find stuff! I think I need a guest editor! But alas, don't think for one second that I forgot about you. Just like my Dope Divas, I challenge you guys to step your shoe game up this upcoming season as well. Here are a few shoe picks that I found for you fellas.
Enjoy!

1.Ronne by Guess
Promo Price $24.98 (STEAL)

(click the pic to shop)
These are for my more relaxed and reserved fellas. When I saw these, I immediately thought of my friend Mike (What up Icy?). Now you can quote me as saying I hate skippies! I wouldn't care if they were made by Lanvin and sold exclusively in Saks, I wouldn't like them. But these, I kinda like. I guess the suede accents drew me in.

2.Cozee by Steve Madden
Sale $69.95

(click the pic to shop)
These also came in black, but the white ones are a little more eye-catching. Overall, they just look more crisp.

3.The TUF Muska Skytop by Supra
$120.00

(click the pic to shop)
Okay. I love Supras! And I love men who wear them! That is all...

4.Nike Dunk High Premium

Sale $79.99 (STEAL)

(click the pic to shop)

As much as I love Supras, I love Dunks even more (what up Nike?!). It is my favorite shoe hands down regardless of who's wearing them...man, woman, child, dog, or cat! The Dunk is my favorite shoe in the world so fellas definitely stock up on these in all colors. They never go out of style.

Walk It Out

A short time ago, I was out with some friends of mine and this song called "Watch my shoes" came on. I had on my gorgeous Guess booties and I actually thought to myself "These mofos better not step on my shoes!" That thought was actually the inspiration for this post.

Spring is right around the corner, ladies, so we have to refresh our spring time shoe collection. And by refresh, I don't mean buy a bunch of brightly colored plastic shoes either. I challenge everyone to step it up (no pun intended)!

My never-ending quest for shoes turned up the following picks.

1. The Neon Flash Shoe boot by Alexander McQueen
$970

(Click to shop)
Now I know what you're thinking. There are neon pink accents so it's a license to go over board with neon pink bracelets and earrings! NOPE! By no means is that a Dope thing to do. As a matter of fact, it's clownerrific...borderline circus clown! Keep the outfit subtle when wearing these. The most I would do is carry a small pink clutch to set them off. Statement shoes should make the statement for your outfit. If you have on a million and one brightly colored accessories, the only statement you'll be making is that you look like a circus hoe!

2.The Lantana by Guess
Promo Price $42.50 (STEAL)

(Click to shop)
These are certified stunners! You can pair these with just about any outfit and they would look stunning. Because they are so simple, I would wear these with a plain white tee shirt and pair of jeans. Gorgeous!

3. Strappy Zipper T-Strap Platform heel by Go Jane

Sale Price $24.99 (STEAL)

(click to shop)
Go Jane is the go to spot for low price, high fashion footwear. They rarely have any shoes that I would personally wear more than once, but these are an exception. The neutral brown is simple but the zipper detailing is the highlight of the shoe. The platform will obviously make the heel seem lower so it gives you the green light to wear these shoes with an everyday outfit.

4. Pounce by Carlos by Carlos Santana

$90

(click to shop)

I absolutely love the coloring on these. Not too bright but just bright enough to bring a springtime dress to life. When wearing these, remember to keep it simple. No clown gear!

Sheer Jeanius

Let it be a matter of record that whoever created the blue jean was a genius! Jeans are the mainstay in almost every wardrobe in the world. Up until a few months ago when I fell in love with leggings, I wore jeans every single day of the week. But enough about me, let's get to the good stuff. Here are a few trends that I've spotted around that I found interesting.

1. The skinny jean.
This trend is relatively old and I thought it would have died a long time ago, but thanks to skaters, Scene kids, and anorexia nervosa, it's become the Herpes of the fashion world. Since I hate the word skinny (and because the only thing skinny on me are my arms), I like to refer to them as legging-like jeans. Here are a couple I spotted around the web that tickled my fancy(what the heck is a fancy anyway?)

baby phat

Click the pic to shop
$75
What caught my eye about these was the fact that there was no cat emblazoned on the back pocket! 2 points for Kimora. The second thing was the fact that it comes in normal sizes for us "normal" Dope Divas!! (Oxymoron...I know!)

Rocawear
Sandy Pant

(Click the pic to shop)

$69

Some say that Rocawear has run it's course in urban fashion but I refuse to believe that or accept status quo. I will always love the way my a** looks in a pair of Rocawear jeans. Whoever heads up their women's line needs to be commended. They definitely cater their market. What I love about these in particular is the hot zipper on the bottom. It defintely sets the design off!

2. THE GRAY JEAN
(or even Jean Gray for you Marvel Divas ;)

As much as I love the gray jean, I'm not quite sure if I'm gonna give it a go (again). I had a pair of gray jeans in middle school and I hated them...but I wore them anyway. But only because I had t. Maybe if I can find a way to balance the edginess it brings to the table, I will. The thing about gray jeans is they only go two ways, either 80's or 80's punk and I'm not enamored with either look right about now.

J Brand

(Click the pic to shop)
$215

I kinda like these, I just don't see myself wearing them more than once. However ,for you edgy Dope Divas, I recommend going full out 80s glam with these. Pair these with a sheer top, leather jacket, and a pair of killer stilettos, and you'll have a killer ensemble.

Forever 21

(Click the pic to shop)

These are so punk it makes me want to pair it with a super feminine jacket and a pair of heals (definitely not the ones in the picture ::eek::). I guess I'm not completely lost on this trend but only time will tell if it makes it's way into my closet.

I have a lot more styles to cover, so I'm going to do this in parts. Stay tuned for what's to come ;)

She's Gotta Have It

I'm just freestyling on this post...This is the second time I've seen this item and I love it even more. Anne Hathaway wore this Marc Jacobs sash to Elle Women in Hollywood event back in October and Beyonce has the same sash on for the January cover( What a coincidence Elle!)

Nevertheless, I can imagine this being worn (by me) so may way.... The pattern was actually used quite a bit in his Spring 09 RTW collection...more to come on that

For purchase information on this smashing sash, please visit www.marcjacobs.com

As I Am: Outfit of the Day

I decided to do a DBN. I doubt this will be a regular occurrence because I don't have the patience to take a picture of my outfit everyday... I've tried. It didn't last very long. But here's one for old times sake. I don't recall off the top of my head which bag I wore that day, so you'll have to freestyle that one.

1. Shirt : I got this shirt from Clovis Boutique in Seoul. It's not available online, but you can freestyle with something similar that can be found anywhere in the land. Here's my pick:
Sweet Pea by Staci Frati
Mock Turtleneck Top

MANic Monday: Don't SWEAT the technique

About a week ago, a friend of mine showed me a picture of his girlfriend and him together. She looked great and was dressed to the nines. He, on the other hand, had on a tee shirt and gym shoes. (Big NO NO!) He looked terrible! I told him that he could have at least put on a sweater. He totally ruined the picture. The sweater paired with a collared shirt has replaced the bow tie as my favorite ensemble to see a man in. There is nothing sexier than a man in a nice sweater and jeans...except for maybe me in anything...*jokes* Fellas, it's a good go-to look if you're trying to escape the faded and/or baggy Tee Shirt look. Whether it be a bright color or a relaxed neutral tone, it borders on the brink of dressy and casually cool style.

Star Style:

Pharrell looks absolutely divine in his sweater and coordinating tie.

Kanye opted for stripes and cuff links and looks great effortlessly.

Here, Brad Pitt keeps it simple and relaxed.

Street Style:
This look is just not for "celebs". This versatile look can be worn to just about any everyday function...Take a look below for reference.

My Picks

Ralph Lauren
Wool Shawl Cable-Knit Sweater
$265.00
